  • A clear picture of a morning Liturgy at the break of a dawn in LA stands before my mind’s eye:

Reader Michael, in a purple sticharion and flipflops on his bare feet fulfilling his obedience with a heartfelt heed and reverence.  Pious and reserved subdeacon Marc stoically carrying all his pains and pacing through the service as an oldschool mechanical metronome.  And of course, our precious Father John, with his sincere love for everyone, serving before the altar in deep prayer and humbly carrying all the burdens of an Orthodox priest in a democratic society.

Meanwhile, the church is full of beloved people who are dear to my heart.  Everyone with their own “bugs in the head,” but soulmates nonetheless.  After all, regardless of our whimsical desires, we are all children of one family of Christ, anointed with one crism.  How I love all of you with your differences and nuances!

Although we often annoy each other, the overcoming of these troubles with the spiritual intelligence is the key to our salvation.  As the Apostle said: "Carry each other's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ."  After all, we are not living in a monastery.  How else could learn meekness and humility, if we did not have our vexing neighbors?  But the Lord Himself commanded us in the Holy Gospel: "Learn from me, for am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest for your souls... "  What could be better than this peaceful rest of one’s soul, which comes with the quiet joy of gratitude to God that overflows our hearts.

Everything in this world is temporary, including our lives.  But every moment, which we lived in love and with love, will go with us into eternity and no one will be able take it away.  This is that incorruptible wealth of which Christ spoke and which we gather for eternity.

So let us strive with every fiber of his soul towards this life of love.  Let us find reasons for love in all that surrounds us, in big and small : in the beam of the morning sun, blue sky and clouds, beautiful trees, the noise of the surf, good smile, harmonious singing, heartfelt prayer, companionship, family dinner ...

We do not know the timing of our life or the life of others, neither do we know when will this world end.  Thus, it is important to devote every day of one’s life to the accumulation of love in the heart.  God is a Spirit of Love and Truth, and life in this Spirit is paradise for the human soul.
Truth is unattainable without Love, while Love only comes to those who remain in Truth.

  • The perfect home for college students!
When my busy school schedule kept me from going to my home church on Sundays, I stumbled across this parish and IMMEDIATELY fell in love. This is by far the most beautifully humble church I have visited in so long. The priest, Fr. John, and his wife, Presbytera Deborah, are so kind and friendly, as well as every single person in this parish. They have frequent services through out the week which makes it super easy to stop by whenever you're in the area, and their chanting is heavenly. The 5:30am liturgy is an absolute blessing. I know it sounds ridiculously early but, gosh, it has completely changed my life and refreshed my faith once again. And believe me, this may sound shocking, but waking up early to make it to a 5:30am liturgy is doable! The service is short and sweet that I get to go home after and take a nap before I attend to my daily schedule. The peace and joy that stays with you from the service is simply priceless.
